Tsuruoka Castle Town: Samurai History & Silk Heritage
Among Japan's many castle towns, Tsuruoka has a distinctive atmosphere: descendants of the former domain lord still live here today, affectionately called "Otono-sama" (the lord) by local residents. After the Meiji Restoration, former samurai of the Shonai domain laid down their swords, took up farming, and opened the Matsugaoka Reclamation Settlement — the beginning of a silk industry whose core processes remain here today, making this Japan's northernmost silk-producing region.
A local, English-speaking guide will take you through the Chido Museum, Chido-kan school, and Matsugaoka Reclaimed Farmland, tracing the Shonai region's modern history and its samurai-linked silk heritage.

Chido Museum
Located in a corner of the former Tsuruoka Castle, the museum holds a wealth of materials on the history and culture of the region, and many historic buildings have been relocated to its grounds.

Chido-kan
This former school, established by the Shonai clan about 200 years ago — the only one of its kind still standing in the Tohoku region — is now used as a museum. Its school philosophy, which differed from other clan schools across the country, still strongly influences the region today.

Matsugaoka Reclamation Settlement
About 3,000 former Shonai samurai traded their swords for hoes to open this reclamation settlement — the birthplace of the region's silk industry, known as "Samurai Silk." Stroll the grounds and visit the Silk Mirai-kan, home to exhibits on samurai-linked silk and a shop selling Tsuruoka silk.
