One-Day Rebirth Journey: Mt. Haguro & Tsuruoka Castle Town
Visiting Dewa Sanzan — Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono — has long been known in Japan as a "journey of rebirth," drawing travelers for centuries who come to reset the mind and body and find renewal and strength for the road ahead.
At the foot of Dewa Sanzan lies Tsuruoka, a castle town with a special atmosphere of its own: descendants of the former domain lord still live here today, affectionately called "Otono-sama" (the lord) by residents, and the Meiji-era Matsugaoka Reclaimed Farmland laid the foundation for Japan's northernmost silk-producing region. This full-day tour brings both Mt. Haguro and Tsuruoka together in a single, unhurried day.

Zuishinmon Gate
Zuishinmon Gate marks the start of the journey of rebirth. From here, the stone steps lined with cedar trees begin.

National Treasure Five-Story Pagoda
This five-story pagoda stands along the cedar-lined path. The current pagoda was rebuilt approximately 600 years ago and is designated as a National Treasure. To reach the summit, you will return to Zuishinmon Gate and be guided there by car — or, if you choose to walk, the climb takes about 50 minutes up steep stone steps.

Mt. Haguro Summit: Sanjin Gosaiden
This shrine enshrines the deities of the three mountains of Dewa Sanzan: Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono. On clear days, you can see Mt. Gassan in the distance.

Mt. Haguro Saikan (Lunch)
Enjoy a lunch of shojin ryori — traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine passed down at Dewa Sanzan.

Matsugaoka Reclamation Settlement
About 3,000 former Shonai samurai traded their swords for hoes to open this reclamation settlement. This site became the birthplace of the region's silk industry, now known as "Samurai Silk."

Chido-kan
This former school, established by the Shonai clan about 200 years ago, is now used as a museum. Its school philosophy, which differed from other clan schools across the country, still strongly influences the region today.

Chido Museum
Located in a corner of the former Tsuruoka Castle, the museum holds a wealth of materials on the history and culture of the region, and many historic buildings have been relocated to its grounds.

- The stone steps from Zuishinmon Gate to the summit of Mt. Haguro total 2,446 steps. Please consider your fitness level.
- Museum and facility admission fees are included in the tour price.
